The Art Nouveau art movement emerged in Paris in 1925 as a continuation of the art movement and also as a reaction to the movement. It is a design style applied in areas such as architecture, decorative arts and furniture items. The movement, which took its name from the ‘Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts Exhibition’ held in Paris in 1925, brought together modern design, high craftsmanship and the use of fine materials. The architectural and decorative style, which became widespread in America in the 1920s and 1930s, was born as a reaction to the environment of poverty that emerged after World War I. In the 1920s, consumption increased in the rapidly industrializing and modernizing American society, and the ‘Glorious 20s’ era, also known as the period of abundance and prosperity, had begun. The impact of social changes reflected in areas such as architecture, design, decoration, visual arts and fashion was also effective in the formation of Art Deco. Art Deco applications are distinguished primarily by the use of high-priced materials. In buildings designed in the Art Deco style, straight and sharp lines, geometric shapes, aerodynamic forms and bright colors stand out. According to some sources, Art Deco, attributed as the version of modernism that came to life in fashion and decoration, was intertwined with Fauvism, Purism, Expressionism, Futurism, Cubism movements and existing architectural traditions in Europe, and was also influenced by Egyptian and Aztec art. The style, which utilized Gothic ornamental elements as in Art Nouveau, ended after the 1930s when architects wanted to separate architecture from ornamentation and advocated functionality rather than ornamentation; however, it started to gain respect again in the 1960s. The biggest criticism directed at the movement is that it lacked conceptual content compared to the architectural styles that preceded it. Art Deco, which was born as a follower of the previous Art Nouveau movement and also as a reaction to the movement, was greatly influenced by Cubism. In addition to the geometric and fragmented forms commonly seen in Art Deco style architecture, it is also possible to encounter curved forms and plant motifs - an Art Nouveau influence - as in the Clarice Cliff building in England. Architectural projects planned in the Art Deco style were mostly completed between 1928 and 1935 and were associated with skyscraper architecture, especially in America. Important examples of Art Deco in architecture include the Rockefeller Building, the Chrysler Building, the Empire State Building and the Chicago Board of Trade Building.
